Seahawks Split Pair of Games to Open Season

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW opened its 2016 softball season by earning a split against Saint Francis (Pa.) and Eastern Kentucky at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Seahawk Softball Bash at Boseman Field on Friday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who started a string of 19 consecutive home games to begin the year, dropped their season opener by an 11-0 margin against Saint Francis in the tournament opener before claiming a 5-4 victory over Eastern Kentucky.

Freshman Kali Jones collected two hits, including a double, while five other Seahawks recorded a hit in the win over Eastern Kentucky.
 Sophomore Sarah Davis earned the complete-game victory against Eastern Kentucky, scattering seven hits while allowing two earned runs. She also struck out eight hitters without a walk. 

How It Happened vs. Saint Francis: The Red Flash batted around in the first and fourth innings while scoring four times in each frame. Ethel Santai and Keterah DeVries combined to record a no-hitter for Saint Francis while junior Peyton Jordan took the loss for the Seahawks after allowing five runs in 1.1 innings.  

How It Happened vs. Eastern Kentucky: After allowing a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, the Seahawks scored five consecutive runs in their first two trips to the plate to build a 5-2 advantage. Freshman Anna Hessenthaler plated two runs with a pinch-hit single in the second inning after UNCW scored three times in the first inning, including a two-run single by junior Nella Chamblee.   

Inside the Box Scores: Chamblee, freshman Rachel Willis and junior Merritt Wilkinson each reached base in both contests on Friday … The Seahawks left 10 runners on base in the two games, including seven against Saint Francis … A total of 15 players saw action in the two games on Friday while 13 different players started at least one game.

Up Next for the Seahawks: UNCW faces Army to open play on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
