VolleyHawks Suffer First Loss Of Season

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – Despite a career-high 23 kills and season-high 20 digs from UNCW junior Nicole Lott, Sacramento State dealt UNCW its first loss of the season, 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-22), on Saturday at the Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational at Gore Arena.

The Hornets improved to 5-1 with the four-set win while the Seahawks (4-1) suffered their first loss of the season.

Lott eclipsed her previous career-high of 21 kills set last season to lead the Seahawks. No other Seahawks finished with double digit kills. Defensively, senior Lindsay Hartmann posted a match-high 29 digs.

Sloan Lovett and Lauren Kissell led a balanced Sacramento State offense with 15 kills apiece. Shannon Boyle rounded out a double-double performance with 12 kills and 18 digs.

Quotable: "We started off very strong in the first set, but Sacramento State played smart volleyball and attacked some weaknesses in our defense," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "They played a balanced match offensively and we struggled to get kills and side out in certain rotations. It'll be important to rebound from this and get back to playing our best for the next match today against Norfolk State."

How it happened: UNCW got out to a quick start hitting .263 in winning the opening set. The Hornets, however, edged the Seahawks, 26-24, in a second set that saw the score tied 14 times. SSU hit .289 in the final two sets.

Notes: Lott now has 36 kills in two matches at the tournament … Alyssa Desjardins continued to excel at setter with 38 assists … UNCW out blocked its opponent for the fifth time this season … Meredith Peacock's six blocks moved her to within one of tying Kim Cavanaugh for second on UNCW's total blocks list.

Up next: UNCW faces Norfolk State at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday as it wraps up its tournament appearance.
