Seahawks Sweep Norfolk State To Improve To 5-1


BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – UNCW closed out its Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational appearance on Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Norfolk State as Nicole Lott and Lindsay Hartmann were named to the all-tournament team for their impressive performances.

The Seahawks concluded the tournament with a 2-1 record and improved to 5-1 on the season. The Spartans, meanwhile, dropped to 0-6 after an 0-3 showing over the weekend.

In the second of two matches on the day for the Seahawks, Lott led the Seahawks with eight kills while Anna Moss and Meredith Peacock added seven apiece. Hartmann had a match-high 15 digs while setters Alyssa Desjardins and Bella Borgiotti had 14 assists each.

UNCW rolled on the offensive end, hitting .291 (35-10-86) while NSU hit a meager .042 (28-24-96).

Angie Darcus and Janay Frazier paced the Spartans with seven and six kills, respectively, while setter Darcy Moore handed out 21 assists.

Quotable: "A win is always a nice way to end the weekend and we were able to utilize some different lineups and personnel to earn it," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "I was happy to see the team rebound and overall there were a lot of positives on the weekend and a few things we need to work on."

"Nicole (Lott) and Lindsay (Hartmann) both had outstanding performances in all three matches. They are two of the hardest workers in the gym on a daily basis and I'm glad to see that dedication paid off this weekend."

How it happened: In the opening set, teams traded leads twice and forced four ties before UNCW scored 12 consecutive points to break open a 9-8 Seahawk lead.

Notes: Peacock finished with three blocks to move into sole possession of second on UNCW's all-time total blocks list … Peacock also hit a team-high .636 (7-0-11) and had two service aces … Lott led UNCW at the net with a season-best four blocks … Freshman Maddy Kline made her collegiate debut with three kills and a team-high three aces … UNCW improved to 5-0 all-time against Norfolk State.

Up next: The Seahawks open a stretch that sees them play three straight NCAA tournament participants, all on the road. UNCW begins the three-game road swing with a 6 p.m. start on Sept. 11 at North Carolina.
