Bonner's Hat Trick Propels UNCW to 5-1 Win

2015 UNCW Courtyard by Marriott Wrightsville Beach Tournament Central Page
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior forward Colin Bonner (Reservoir H.S./Fulton, Md.) recorded the second "hat trick" of his college career by scoring three goals as UNCW (2-0-1) earned its second straight win with a 5-1 victory over North Florida (1-2-0) at the Courtyard by Marriott Wrightsville Beach Classic on Friday evening.

Bonner, who posted the fourth multi-goal game of his career, scored two of his three goals in the first half as UNCW built a 3-1 lead over the Ospreys en route to the victory. He scored in the 13th minute off an assist from freshman Ben Fisher (Chapel Hill H.S./Chapel Hill, N.C.) before converting a penalty kick in the 27th minute.
Sophomore midfielder Josh Castellanos (Ponte Vedre, Fla.) trimmed the Ospreys' deficit to 2-1 in the 29th minute when he knocked in a rebound of a penalty kick by junior defender Simen Solstad (Baerum, Norway) that was stopped by junior goalkeeper Sean Melvin (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada).

After senior midfielder Daniel Escobar (Cali, Colombia) upped the Seahawks' lead to 3-1 with 15:04 remaining in the first half, Bonner completed the "hat trick" by scoring off a feed from senior Jose Garcia (Woodward Academy/College Park, Ga.) in the 53rd minute.

Following a 40-minute lightning delay in the 67th minute, the Seahawks added one final goal with 19:58 left in regulation when Fisher scored the first goal of his college career after receiving an outlet pass from Escobar that led to a breakaway opportunity.

#SeahawkStats: Friday's game between the Seahawks and the Ospreys was the first-ever regular season meeting between the two teams … After earning a 0-0 tie in the season opener against High Point, UNCW has outscored its opponents by a 7-2 margin in the last two contests … Bonner posted the fifth "hat trick" in program history … He was also the last player to accomplish the feat after scoring three goals against Northeastern on Nov. 6, 2013 … Bonner is the only player in school history with more than one career "hat trick" … UNCW scored five goals in a game for the first time since Nov. 2, 2009 when the Seahawks earned a 5-0 victory over Drexel.

What's Ahead for the Seahawks: UNCW completes play at the Courtyard by Marriott Wrightsville Beach Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. contest against Campbell. It will be the second game of a doubleheader as Elon faces North Florida at 12 p.m.
