Second Half Goals Propel Clemson Past UNCW, 2-1

CLEMSON, South Carolina – Facing its second nationally-ranked opponent of the season, UNCW used a goal by senior Katrina Guillou (Bishop Ireton H.S./Fort Washington, Md.) to build a 1-0 halftime lead at No. 23 Clemson on Sunday afternoon. But, the Tigers answered with two goals in the second half to take a 2-1 victory over the Seahawks at Riggs Field.

The win allowed the Tigers to remain unbeaten with a 3-0-0 record while dropping the Seahawks' record to 1-3-0.

"Clemson is an outstanding team," Coach Paul Cairney said. "They are well coached and can attack you in so many different ways. I thought our team executed the game plan well and we wanted to be tied or ahead at halftime.

"A few mental errors here and there along with good finishing by Clemson allowed the Tigers back into it," Cairney added. "While we are disappointed with the result, we can take away many positives with the performance.

Guillou gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when she scored her second goal of the season off assists from senior Lindsey Byrne (W.A. Hough H.S./Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Lauren Nalevaiko (Ardrey Kell H.S./Charlotte, N.C.).

The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 in the 62nd minute when junior defender Claire Wagner (Panther Creek H.S./Cary, N.C.) converted a corner kick by sophomore Shannon Horgan (Long Beach H.S./Long Beach, N.Y.) for her first goal of the season.

With 11:49 remaining, junior defender Jenna Weston (Lake Norman H.S./Mooresville, N.C.) tallied the eventual game-winning goal on an 18-yard shot after receiving a pass from Wagner.

Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy (Lake Norman H.S./Huntersville, N.C.) made three saves in the loss for UNCW, which was outshot by an 18-9 margin. Junior Kailen Sheridan (Whitby, Ontario) tallied four saves in the win for Clemson.

"I am very proud of our toughness today," Cairney said. "We will simply get back at it in practice and prepare for the next game."
