UNCW Outslugs App. State To Win In Four Sets

CLEMSON, South Carolina – UNCW overcame an opening-set loss to win the next three sets and clip Appalachian State, 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21), Saturday morning in the Big Orange Bash at Jervey Gymnasium.

The Seahawks improved to 2-0 while App. State dipped to 1-1.

Junior Kristen Powell powered the Seahawks with 15 kills, tying her career-high. Nicole Lott finished with her second double-double in as many matches with 12 kills and a team-high 15 digs.

The Seahawks out-blocked the Mountaineers, 13-7, as senior Meredith Peacock totaled nine blocks and Powell and Lott added seven and five respectively.

Senior libero Lindsay Hartmann collected 14 digs while defensive specialist Morgan Owney had 13.

ASU's Jess Keller held match-high honors with 24 kills while Emily Corrigan chipped in 15. Setter Paige Brown handed out 52 assists and rounded out a double-double effort with 16 digs.

Quotable: "Our match against App. State was a complete team effort," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "We had trouble stopping their outside hitters, but the rest of our play was strong and balanced to get the win. ASU is a great program and in-state rival. Both side played with a lot of fight and passion."

How it happened: UNCW hit .313 (31-5-83) in the final two sets to win the match. ASU, meanwhile, combined to hit just .203. In the third set, UNCW committed just a pair of hitting errors and finished with a .385 hitting average.

Notes: UNCW improved to 6-10 all-time against App. State … The Mountaineers were picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt Conference … UNCW freshmen Halle Hunt and Anna Moss finished with seven and six kills, respectively … Setter Alyssa Desjardins had 34 assists … UNCW's 10 service aces were the most since recording 11 against James Madison during the 2013 season.
