Powell Named MVP As Seahawks Take Big Orange Bash Title

CLEMSON, South Carolina – Senior Meredith Peacock collected 11 kills and junior Nicole Lott had 10 for her third straight match in double figures as UNCW won the Big Orange Bash, hosted by Clemson, with a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-22, 26-24) over Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon at Jervey Gymnasium.

The Seahawks closed out the season-opening weekend with a 3-0 mark while Charleston Southern finished 0-3.

Junior Kristen Powell earned Big Orange Bash tournament Most Valuable Player honors and was joined on the all-tournament team by junior Alyssa Desjardins and Lott.

Powell had eight kills in the match and added three blocks. Peacock and freshman Anna Moss held match-high honors with four blocks apiece.

Siraya Windsor and Katrina Houston both had eight kills for CSU, which hit .113 on the afternoon.

Quotable: "Overall, this was a great opening weekend because we had to compete at a high level right out of the gate," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "It also gave us an idea on things to work on in the future.
"Alyssa (Desjardins) was steady and calculated with her offense and her connection with Nicole (Lott) and KP (Krisen Powell) was consistent and strong.
"As the tournament MVP, Kristen (Powell) stepped up and played six rotations at times to earn some key points this weekend."
