VolleyHawks Sweep Clemson Behind Lott And Powell In Season Opener

UNCW improves to 5-2 in season openers during Bambenek's tenure

CLEMSON, South Carolina – Nicole Lott totaled 14 kills and 10 digs and Kristen Powell added 11 kills and 16 digs as UNCW opened the season with a 3-0 (25-19, 31-29, 25-20) win over Clemson at the Big Orange Bash on Friday at Jervey Gymnasium.

For the Seahawks, it was the second all-time win over an ACC member and the fourth straight season-opening victory.

UNCW freshman Anna Moss collected seven kills in 14 attacks and finished with a .429 average. She also had a match-high eight blocks.

Clemson's Leah Perri held game-high honors with 15 kills while Kailey Harvell added 14. Perri finished a double-double with 11 digs.

The Seahawks out-hit the Tigers, .198-.113, and dominated at the net, out-blocking CU, 13-4.

Quotable: "This was an unbelievable way to start the season," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "The contributions across the board from all our players were exceptional. We served tough and played great defense, but most of all, we kept our composure when things got close. Nicole (Lott) and KP (Kristin Powell) were a great duo at the pins. Our blocking and defense were impressive to start the season."

How it happened: UNCW won the opening set easily, but found itself down 24-22 in the second. UNCW rallied to tie the set at 25-all on a kill from Lott. Clemson jumped to a 29-28 lead before UNCW rattled off the next three points for the win. In the finale, a block from Moss and Powell gave UNCW a 9-8 lead and the Seahawks would finish off the sweep.
