Five-Hit Game for McDowell Leads UNCW To 15-3 Rout Of Blue Hens

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Kennard McDowell had five hits and scored four runs to back the strong pitching of Ryan Foster as UNCW dumped Delaware, 15-3, to win the series and the game on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks upped their record to 32-12 and 14-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Blue Hens dropped their fourth straight and stand at 18-19 and 7-10.
McDowell, who began the day hitting .297, raised his batting average to .322 with his career-high five-hit outing. The junior missed hitting for the cycle, coming up short by a triple. In the seventh inning he belted his third home run of the season.

Zach Shields (2-3), Gavin Stupienski (2-2) and Corey Dick (1-5) each knocked in three runs for the Seahawks who tied their season-high with 15 runs and set a new season-high with 21 hits.

Ryan Foster (5-1) rebounded from his first loss of the season last weekend at Elon by striking out six, walking one and allowing three runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings.

Zach Lopes and Norm Donkin had two hits apiece for the Blue Hens, who ruined Foster's shutout bid with three runs, all with two out in the seventh.

Red-shirt freshman starter Ron Marinaccio (3-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits and five walks over four innings of work.

Up next: The Seahawks and Blue Hens close out the series on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start. Sunday will also be Molly Maid Pink Game for UNCW. The Seahawks will don pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off during the game. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Pretty in Pink Foundation.

How it happened: The Seahawks carried momentum from Friday night's ninth-inning win by scoring two runs in the first against Marinaccio. Steven Linkous, who had three hits and scored three runs, drew a leadoff walk and Shields was hit by a Marinaccio offering. Stupienski opened the scoring with a one-out double and Dick followed with a RBI ground out for a 2-0 lead.

Inside the box score: The last Seahawk to have five hits was Matt Campbell in 2011 against George Mason … Delaware managed to get its leadoff hitter on base just once while UNCW did so five times … The Seahawks were 10-for-22 with RISP while UD was 2-for-5 … Five of Foster's seven hits were with two out.

Notes: The Seahawks improved to 24-6 at home this season … UNCW scored 15 runs against Northeastern earlier this season … UNCW's previous high for hits, 19, was also against Northeastern … UNCW head coach now has 790 career wins … Gavin Stupienski has now reached base in 32 consecutive games … Terence Connelly's single in the seventh extended his hitting streak to eight games while Zach Shields is at seven games-in-a-row … With three hits, Steven Linkous now has a team-best 20 multiple hit games … 11 different Seahawks had hits on the afternoon … Cory Gantz returned to action, walking one and striking out one over two innings, it was his first appearance since March 18.
