UNCW Powers Past Blue Hens, 12-2, To Complete CAA Sweep


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Zach Shields had three hits, including a home run, and the Seahawk pitching staff held Delaware in check on five hits as UNCW completed a sweep of the Blue Hens with a 12-2 win on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The win was UNCW's fourth straight and improved their record to 33-12 overall and 15-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks stayed perfect in league play at home with the sweep, moving to 9-0. UD dropped its fifth consecutive outing and dropped to 18-20 and 7-11.

Jordan Ramsey (6-1) picked up the win in relief, striking out two and allowing two hits in 1.2 innings of work. Ramsey was one of five pitchers used on the afternoon as the staff allowed just five singles and no earned runs.

 UD starter Chad Martin (2-4) took the loss, lasting just 2.2 innings and allowing five runs, four earned.

Zach Lopes had two hits for the Hens.

UNCW combined for six extra base hits as Corey Dick homered while Casey Golden, Gavin Stupienski, Luke Dunlap and Robbie Thorburn all doubled. Shields, Stupienski and Dick all knocked in two runs while Golden scored three runs.

Up next: The Seahawks return to action on May 8, when they open a three-game series against conference-leading College of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

How it happened: Steven Linkous drew a leadoff walk in the first inning and Shields belted an 0-2 offering from Martin one batter later for an early 2-0 lead. The Seahawks added three in the third to put the game out of reach.

Inside the box score: For the second straight game, Delaware landed its leadoff hitter on base just once … The Seahawks were able to do so four times … Both teams were 1-for-9 with two outs … The Seahawks went 6-for-11 with RISP while the Blue Hens went hitless (0-6) … UD went 0-for-15 with runners on base … Delaware left 10 runners on base, UNCW four.

Notes: UNCW held a Delaware offense that scored 51 runs in its previous four CAA outings to just eight runs, five earned, on the weekend … Gavin Stupienski's on-base streak reached 33 games with second inning RBI single … Shields' homer in the first extended his hitting streak to eight games … UNCW has now won 25 games at home for the second time in the last three seasons … The UNCW bullpen has accounted for 24 wins … Steven Linkous moved into a tie for eighth with 26 stolen bases … UNCW starter Josh Roberson tied a UNCW single-game record with four hit batters … UNCW outhit UD, .379-.200 for the series.
