Towson Spoils Senior Day for Seahawks With 4-0 Decision

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore third baseman Holiday Cahill (Cypress H.S./Cypress, Calif.) had two hits and drove in three runs as Towson spoiled Senior Day for UNCW by handing the Seahawks a 4-0 loss in the Colonial Athletic Association series finale at Boseman Field on Sunday morning.

The Tigers, who won for the 11th time in the last 13 games, improved to 25-18 overall and 6-9 in the CAA. Meanwhile, the Seahawks dropped their record to 17-22 overall and 4-11 in CAA play.
 Cahill blasted her team-leading 11th home run of the season in the third inning with a two-run shot to right field and also drove in a run with a single to left field in the seventh inning. She was one of two players to record a multi-hit game for the Tigers as sophomore infielder Tateum Valentine (John Jay Senior H.S./Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with a walk.

Senior Missy McCormick (Palo Verde H.S./Las Vegas, Nev.), who upped her record to 13-6 in the circle, posted her sixth shutout of the season after scattering four hits with eight strikeouts.

Sophomore Nella Chamblee (Corinth Holders H.S./Wendell, N.C.) led UNCW in its home finale with two hits while senior Kristen Jernigan (South Johnston H.S./Benson, N.C.) and sophomore Merritt Wilkinson (Western Alamance H.S./Burlington, N.C.) each added a hit in the loss.

How It Happened: Towson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when freshman Shelby Stracher (Shepherd Hill Regional H.S./Dudley, Mass.) hit her sixth home run with a solo shot to right field off senior Casey Rowland (Colonie Central H.S./Albany, N.Y.). After Cahill's home run upped the lead to 3-0 in the third inning, she drove in another run in the top of the seventh inning for a 4-0 edge.  

Inside the Box Score: The Tigers were 7-for-17 in advancement opportunities … They also had their leadoff hitter reach base four times … UNCW was 0-for-10 with runners on base and 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position … McCormick retired the last eight batters she faced.

Notes: UNCW finished its home schedule with a 15-11 record … Towson has won 8 of the last 11 meetings with UNCW … Sophomore Peyton Jordan (Marvin Ridge H.S./Waxhaw, N.C.) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on five hits with a pair of strikeouts … Freshman Sarah Davis (Walter Williams H.S./Burlington, N.C.) has reached base safely in four consecutive games … Rowland, Jernigan and Jessica Rappe (David W. Butler H.S./Charlotte, N.C.) were honored in pre-game ceremonies in recognition of their final home game … The Seahawks wore pink jerseys as part of "Strike Out Cancer" day.

What's Ahead for UNCW: The Seahawks will begin a seven-game road trip to end the regular season on Wednesday, Apr. 22 with a single game at North Carolina A&T.
