Dunlap Deliverers Big Day At Plate As UNCW Cruises to 9-3 Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Luke Dunlap had four hits and knocked in three runs while Joe Bertone added two hits, including a home run, as UNCW topped visiting North Carolina Central, 9-3, in baseball action on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks snapped a modest three-game losing skid to improve to 7-3 while the Eagles saw their two-game winning streak halted and fell to 3-6.

Dunlap doubled twice, scored twice and knocked in three runs to key UNCW's offense. Gavin Stupienski and Bertone each added two hits. Bertone also had three runs batted in as UNCW broke out to an 8-2 led after five innings.

UNCW junior reliever Taylor Hyssong (1-0) picked the win in his season debut, allowing a run on two hits over two innings.
 
Starter Eric Kimber (0-2) lasted just two innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits, two walks and three NCCU errors.

Troy Marrow collected four hits for NCCU while Kory Wood connected on his first homer of the season.

Up next: Weather will again force an adjustment in the weekend schedule when nationally-ranked Maryland visits Brooks Field. Friday's game has been pushed to Saturday when they two clubs play a doubleheader beginning at noon. Sunday's game will now start at 1 p.m.

How it happened:  UNCW needed just three innings to build an insurmountable lead at 6-0. Bertone's two-run homer to left center made it 3-0 after two innings and Dunlap fueled a three-run third with a two-run double for a 5-0 lead.

Inside the box score: NCCU landed its leadoff hitter on base safely in 6-of-9 innings while the Seahawks did likewise in 5-of-8 … UNCW went 6-for-17 with RISP while NCCU was 1-for-13 … UNCW freshman Austin Easter allowed just one hit with runners on base and held NCCU hitless (0-4) with two outs.

Notes: Easter and Hyssong were making their UNCW debuts … The Seahawks now hold a 6-0 lead in the all-time series with NCCU … The UNCW bullpen combined to allowed two runs over five innings, walked none and struck out six … Casey Golden scored three runs for UNCW … The Seahawks improved to 7-0 at home this season … Connelly and Stupienski extended their on-base streaks to 10 and five, respectively … Connelly was hit by a pitch for the first time this season and 38th in his career … Dunlap's four hits tied his career high set in 2013 at Towson (4/26/13) and his two doubles also matched his career high.
