Diamond Hawks Stay Perfect At Home With Sweep of #12 Maryland


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW plated six runs over the seventh and eighth innings to overcome a 7-5 deficit for an 11-7 win in the nightcap and finish off a doubleheader sweep of nationally-ranked Maryland on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (9-3) remained perfect at Brooks Field with their ninth consecutive win at home and fourth overall. The Terrapins dropped to 7-4 with the pair of setbacks.

Trailing 7-6 in the eighth, UNCW loaded the bases when Robbie Thorburn's bunt single went unfielded. Luke Dunlap then tied the game, scoring on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Zach Shields gave UNCW the lead one batter later with a sacrifice fly.

Whitman Barnes (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, giving the Seahawks three innings of one-hit, one-run relief.

UMD reliever Zach Morris (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs, all unearned, in one inning on the mound.

Corey Dick led the Seahawks with two hits and three runs batted in, two coming off a fifth inning double off the right field wall. Gavin Stupienski knocked in two runs for UNCW.

Tim Lewis was the only Terp with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4.

Maryland (6) and the Seahawks (4) combined for 10 errors in game two.

In the opener, William Shepley(2-0) tossed 2.1 innings of shutout relief for the win while Connelly collected three hits. Jordan Ramsey nailed down his third save, retiring the side in order in the ninth.

Reliever Robert Galligan (0-1) look the loss for Maryland while Brandon Lowe had three hits and drove in two runs.

The teams combined for five home runs in the opener.

How it happened: Game 1: UNCW outscored UMD, 6-5, in the middle three innings for a 7-6 lead and added a run in the eighth to round out the scoring. With the game tied at 6-all, Steven Linkous plated Terence Connelly, who singled to open the inning, with a ground ball to first to give UNCW the lead.
Game 2: UNCW trailed 7-5 in the seventh an errant throw back to the mound by the UMD catcher got away, allowing Linkous to score and cut the deficit to one. In the eighth, UNCW capitalized on a pair of hits, a walk and a pair of throwing errors to score five times and take an 11-7 lead.

Inside the box score: Game 1: UNCW landed it leadoff hitter on base in 4-of-8 innings … Nick Monroe held lefty hitters to 1-for-12, but righties were 5-for-10 … UNCW pitchers allowed just one (1-for-11) hit with two outs … Game 2: UNCW went 5-for-13 with RISP … The Seahawks and Terps landed their leadoff hitters on base four times apiece … Barnes held UMD to 1-for-8 with runners on base and 0-for-3 with two out.

Notes: UNCW now leads the all-time series, 9-3, and have won the last six games … Maryland entered the doubleheader with just three errors on the season and finished the day with seven miscues … UNCW is now 4-0 and in the midst of a 14-game homestand … UNCW saw Stupienski and Dick hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning of game one only to see UMD do the same when Kevin Martir and Anthony Papio led off the sixth inning with homers.
