Seahawks Swept by Hofstra in CAA Doubleheader

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior outfielder Caryn Bailey (Elizabethtown Area H.S./Elizabethtown, Pa.) had five hits, including a home run, and scored four runs as Hofstra (10-7-1, 2-0-0) swept a doubleheader over UNCW (11-10, 0-2) in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.

Hofstra, which is unbeaten in its last four games, earned an 8-0 victory in a six-inning game in the opener before claiming a 3-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Bailey went 2-for-3 in the opener and scored three runs while blasting her second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning. She also added three hits in the second game with a run scored.

Junior outfielder Chloe Fitzgerald (Huntingtown H.S./Prince Frederick, Md.) added four hits with two runs scored for the Pride, which collected 19 hits in the doubleheader against UNCW.

Seniors Morgan Lashley (North Mecklenburg H.S./Davidson, N.C.) and Taylor Pirone (The Ursuline School/New Rochelle, N.Y.) combined to limit the Seahawks to just seven hits in the doubleheader sweep. Lashley tallied seven strikeouts and scattered five hits while Pirone gave up just two hits with six strikeouts.

Sophomore infielder Nella Chamblee (Corinth Holders H.S./Wendell, N.C.) paced UNCW with two hits in the doubleheader.

How It Happened – Game 1: Hofstra took advantage of six walks by senior pitcher Casey Rowland (Colonie Central H.S./Albany, N.Y.) in the first inning to build a 4-0 lead. The Pride added two more runs in the fifth inning before Bailey hit her two-run home run in the sixth inning to give Hofstra an 8-0 advantage.

How It Happened – Game 2: The Pride scored three times on four hits in the top of the first inning to take an early 3-0 advantage over the Seahawks. Meanwhile, Pirone retired the first 12 UNCW hitters she faced before sophomore Claudia Spinelli (Marvin Ridge H.S./Waxhaw, N.C.) ended the perfect game bid with a single to right field to lead off the fifth inning.

Notes of Interest: Hofstra has posted a 3-0-1 record in its last four games … The Pride has defeated UNCW in 16 straight meetings and leads the all-time series by a 32-3 margin … UNCW has dropped six straight games following a five-game win streak … The Seahawks have been limited to just two hits in three of their last six games … Freshman Abby Harris (Jack Britt H.S./Fayetteville, N.C.) posted the first hit of her college career with a single in the fifth inning of the first game.

What's Ahead for UNCW: The Seahawks will wrap up their first CAA series of the season on Sunday afternoon with a single game against Hofstra at 12:00 p.m. Sunday also marks the Seahawks' annual Military Appreciation Day and the team will wear camouflage uniforms.
