WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior
Morgan Lashley (North Mecklenburg H.S./Davidson, N.C.) allowed just three hits and earned her third consecutive shutout as Hofstra (11-7-1, 3-0) completed a three-game Colonial Athletic Association sweep over UNCW (11-11, 0-3) with a 6-0 victory at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.
Lashley, who improved to 7-1 on the season, earned her second win of the weekend by scattering just three hits while recording eight strikeouts with just one walk.
Juniors
Chloe Fitzgerald (Huntingtown H.S./Prince Frederick, Md.) and
Kim Smith (Sussex Technical H.S./Georgetown, Del.) each tallied two hits to lead a nine-hit attack by the Pride. Fitzgerald went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Smith added a 2-for-4 effort with her first home run of the season.
Senior
Casey Rowland (Colonie Central H.S./Albany, N.Y.), sophomore
Merritt Wilkinson (Western Alamance H.S./Burlington, N.C.) and freshman
Sarah Davis (Walter Williams H.S./Burlington, N.C.) each recorded a hit for UNCW in the loss.
Rowland suffered the loss in the circle after allowing two runs in 4.1 innings with two strikeouts and four walks. Davis pitched 2.2 innings in relief and gave up four runs on four hits with three walks.
How It Happened: Smith gave Hofstra a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when she blasted a solo home run to left field. The Pride upped the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning on a Smith RBI single before adding two runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Â Â Â Â Â
Notes of Interest: Hofstra leads the all-time series by a 33-3 margin and has won 17 straight games over the Seahawks … Hofstra has a five-game unbeaten streak, posting a 4-0-1 record during that stretch … Wilkinson has hit safely in four of her last six games … The Seahawks wore camouflage jerseys as part of their Military Appreciation Day festivities … The jerseys were auctioned off with the benefits going to Step Up for Soldiers … UNCW has now lost seven straight games after a five-game winning streak.
