Big Seventh Inning Lifts Diamond Hawks Past Huskies, 10-5


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW exploded for six runs in the seventh inning and red-shirt freshman Whitman Barnes tossed four shutout innings of relief as the Seahawks rallied past Northeastern, 10-5, in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 13-6 on the season while the Huskies fell to 7-10.

Steven Linkous led UNCW's 16-hit attack with four hits while Zach Shields and Kennard McDowell added three hits apiece. Terence Connelly scored three times and had two hits. Corey Dick added two hits, including his third home run of the season, and knocked in three runs.

 Barnes (3-0) picked up his second win of the week by limiting the Huskies to three hits and a walk over the final four innings. The lefthander finished with a career-high six strikeouts.

Josh Treff headed up the NU lineup with three hits, including his first round tripper of the season which came on the second pitch of the game from UNCW starter Nick Monroe. Cam Handley, Rob Fonseca, Maxwell Burt had two hits apiece. Fonseca also homered, it was hit third of the season.

Reliever Aaron Civale took the loss to dip to 1-1. Civale lasted just 1.2 innings, allowed eight hits and six runs.

Up next: The Seahawks and Huskies continue the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The game will also be Miracle League of Wilmington Day with game-worn jerseys being auctioned off during the game. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the organization.

How it happened: UNCW sent 11 batters to the plate in the six-run sixth that was highlighted by Dick's three-run shot to left that gave the Seahawks an 8-5 lead.

Inside the box score: UNCW plated five two-out RBI's and went 8-for-15 with two outs on the night … Linkous went 2-for-2 with RISP, had two two-out hits and reached base safely twice while leading off innings … Barnes held NU righties to 2-for-12 hitting … NU was just 2-for-11 with two outs.

Notes: The Seahawks improved to 9-1 against NU at home all-time … For Barnes, it was his second win of the week, both in relief, with the other coming against Columbia … UNCW's six-run seventh was a season-high … Gavin Stupienski, who had two hits and knocked in two runs, extended his on-base streak to 14 games … Stupienski and Dick also pushed their team-high hitting streaks to five games.
