Sarah Davis (Walter Williams H.S./Burlington, N.C.) and sophomore
Merritt Wilkinson (Western Alamance H.S./Burlington, N.C.) each collected two hits, but it was not enough as UNCW (3-3) dropped a pair of games to finish play at the Willie Jewell's Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon.
After falling by a 2-1 count against Tennessee Tech in the first game of the day, the Seahawks suffered a 6-2 setback in their tournament finale against the host Buccaneers.
Davis and Wilkinson each posted a triple in the doubleheader and combined to drive in two of the Seahawks' three runs.
In addition to her performance at the plate, Davis allowed two unearned runs while scattering four hits. She tallied two strikeouts, but allowed four walks.
Senior
Casey Rowland (Colonie Central H.S./Albany, N.Y.) suffered her first loss of the season in the second game against the Buccaneers, allowing five runs, including four unearned runs, in 5.1 innings. She recorded four strikeouts with just one walk.
How It Happened vs. Tennessee Tech: Each team scored an unearned run in the third inning before the Golden Eagles scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead they did not relinquish.
How It Happened vs. Charleston Southern: The Buccaneers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before UNCW answered with a run in each of the next two innings to even the score. Charleston Southern took advantage of two UNCW errors to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take control of the game. Â
Notes of Interest: Wilkinson and Davis were the only two UNCW players to record a hit in all three games this weekend … Senior
Kristen Jernigan had her four-game hit streak snapped after going 0-for-3 in the doubleheader … UNCW forced Tennessee Tech and Charleston Southern to leave 17 runners on base in the two games … In the last three games, UNCW opponents have left 26 runners on the basepaths.
What's Ahead for UNCW: The Seahawks return to Boseman Field on Wednesday, Feb. 25 to host N.C. State at 5:00 p.m. It will be the first of 10 straight home games for UNCW.
