Pitching Leads Seahawks to 4-1 Victory Over North Carolina A&T

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman Sarah Davis (Walter Williams H.S./Burlington, N.C.) and sophomore Peyton Jordan (Marvin Ridge H.S./Waxhaw, N.C.) combined to allow just one earned run on six hits as UNCW (4-3) opened play at the Seahawk Softball Spring Classic by edging North Carolina A&T, 4-1, at Boseman Field on Friday afternoon.

Davis, who improved to 3-1 on the season, scattered five hits in five innings with three strikeouts. She also drove in a run with a walk at the plate.

Meanwhile, Jordan allowed just one hit in two innings to earn the first save of her college career. She also posted a strikeout in her third relief appearance of the season.

Sophomore Maiven McKnight (Massaponax H.S./Fredericksburg, Va.) took the loss for the Aggies (3-6) after giving up four earned runs in 4.2 innings. She allowed four hits with six walks and one strikeout.

How It Happened: The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before UNCW answered with four unanswered runs. The Seahawks scored twice in the third inning before adding single markers in the fourth and fifth innings.

game on Friday afternoon.
Notes of Interest: The Aggies left eight runners on base and were 0-for-7 in two-out situations … North Carolina A&T has dropped five straight games after a 3-1 start … UNCW improved to 3-1 on its home field this year … Friday's game against the Aggies is the first of nine consecutive home games for the Seahawks … Davis and sophomore Merritt Wilkinson (Western Alamance H.S./Burlington, N.C.) each had their three-game hit streaks come to an end … Senior Casey Rowland (Colonie Central H.S./Albany, N.Y.) posted her team-high fifth double for the Seahawks.

Coach Norton Says: "Our pitching did a great job of keeping us in the game, which allowed our hitters to make adjustments. Peyton did a great job of getting the lead-off batter out in the late innings."

What's Ahead for UNCW: The Seahawks will continue play at the Seahawk Softball Spring Classic on Saturday with a pair of games. They will face Marist at 12 p.m. before hosting Western Carolina at approximately 2:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the Seahawk Digital Network.
