UNCW Rallies Twice For Two Wins On Saturday


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW plated seven runs in the bottom of the eighth as the Seahawks rallied from an early deficit to sail past visiting George Mason, 12-8, on Saturday at Brooks Field in the Hughes Bros. Challenge.

The Seahawks (5-0) stayed perfect on the young season after also edged Western Carolina, 6-4, earlier in the day. George Mason dipped to 1-4 while Western saw its record evened at 2-2.

UNCW is 5-0 for the first time since it opened 2009 with nine straight wins.

William Shepley (1-0) picked up the win in the night cap while Austin Magestro (1-0) earned the win in the opener.

Bryan Sammons (1-1) took the loss for WCU while reliever Mark Maksimow (0-1) was tagged with the loss for George Mason.

Up next: The Seahawks play Wake Forest at 2pm on Sunday

How it happened: Game 1: Trailing 3-0 in the second, UNCW drew even with three runs in the bottom of the second and took a 6-3 lead in the sixth with three more runs. In the sixth, Steven Linkous opened the scoring with a RBI single and a WCU error led to two more runs later in the inning.

Game 2: UNCW again trailed early before exploding for seven runs in the eighth inning to take a 12-6 lead. Thirteen batters made their way to the plate in the inning as UNCW combined for seven hits and took advantage of a pair of GMU errors.
Notes: Jordan Ramsey picked up his second save of the season in the opener … Terence Connelly, Casey Golden and Robbie Thorburn each had three hits in the George Mason game … UNCW's 18 hits in the nightcap were a season high … Magestro tossed 4.1 innings of one-run baseball for his first collegiate win … Fellow freshman Josh Roberson went a career-long four innings in relief in game two … UNCW has raised its batting average to .328 while opponents are hitting .238.
