Diamond Hawks Stay Undefeated With 8-4 Win Over Wake Forest


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Evan Phillips went five strong innings and Kennard McDowell belted a grand slam as UNCW topped Wake Forest, 8-4, in the final game of the Hughes Bros. Challenge on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks remained undefeated on the young season at 6-0 while the Demon Deacons dipped to 4-3.

Phillips (1-0) limited WFU to three runs, two earned, while striking out four over five innings. The bullpen took over the sixth and allowed one run on two hits over the final four innings.

Reliever Chris Farish (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on four walks in 2/3 of an inning.

 Steven Linkous and Corey Dick had two hits apiece while Linkous swiped two bases. Gavin Stupienski knocked in two runs with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.

Jonathan Pryor held game-high honors with three hits including his first collegiate homer of the season, coming in the seventh inning.

Up next: The Seahawks host long-time regional rival Campbell on Feb. 24 at 4 p.m.

How it happened: Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, UNCW drew even on a sacrifice fly by Terence Connelly scoring Gavin Stupienski, who tied the game three batters earlier with a RBI double. In the fifth with a run in and the bases loaded, McDowell launched his first career home run with the Seahawks for an 8-3 lead.

Inside the box score: UNCW pitchers allowed just 2-of-9 WFU leadoff hitters to reach base … UNCW managed to score eight run despite going 1-for-9 in RBI situations … The Seahawks plated four two-out RBI's … The Seahawks continue to advance runners, moving 11-of-19 up on the afternoon.

Notes: UNCW's 6-0 start is the best since the 2009 club opened with nine straight wins … Phillips' 5-inning outing was the most since a stint of 5.2 innings at Pepperdine (3/4/14) … It was Evans' fifth career win … Casey Golden and Zach Shields have opened the season with six-game hitting streaks … Reliever Jordan Ramsey has allowed just two hits and struck out 12 in 6.2 innings … With the win, UNCW tied Wake Forest in the all-time series at 15-all … UNCW hit .320 and outscored its opponents, 26-16, during the Hughes Bros. Challenge.
