Powell Leads Sweet-Swinging Seahawks Past Tribe

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Kristen Powell's 16 kills and 14 digs powered UNCW to a 3-1 (25-10, 24-26, 25-20, 25-20) win over host William & Mary on Friday in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action in Kaplan Arena.

UNCW's fifth consecutive win against the Tribe pushed its record to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the CAA. The Tribe, meanwhile, fell to 7-11 and 1-4.

Powell, who was one kill from tying her career-high of 17 kills, was joined in double digits by Meredith Peacock, who finished with 14 kills in 23 attacks (.478). Alyssa Desjardins also fashioned a double-double with 28 assists and 13 digs.

Sydney Biniak paced the Tribe with 14 kills while Dessi Koleva added 11 kills and finished off a double-double of her own with 18 digs.

Quotable: "I'm very happy with our offensive production tonight," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Both KP (Kristen Powell) and Meredith (Peacock) were on fire and William & Mary didn't have an answer for them.

"W&M was a tough team to block and ran some plays that we'll have to work on defending better. This is a great road win and we're looking forward to playing our in-state rival (Elon) on Sunday."

Up next: The Seahawks close out the weekend with a 1 p.m. start at Elon on Oct. 11.

How it happened: Simply put, the Seahawks slugged their way past the Tribe, hitting .302 on the match. It was the second time this season UNCW hit above .300. Powell finished with a .371 hitting average. UNCW combined for 33 kills and just six hitting errors in sets two and three.

Notes: UNCW, which entered the match ranked fifth nationally in opponent hitting average, held W&M in check with a .138 hitting average … UNCW's season-high for hitting average is .387 against Presbyterian … Katie McCullough has 29 kills over her last three matches … Lindsay Hartmann had 13 digs and needs four more to reach 1,000 for her career … The Tribe still leads the all-time series, 48-9, but UNCW has won eight of the last 10 matches … UNCW is 4-2 on the road this season.
