Foster's Golden Goal Lifts Seahawks Over W&M

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Junior midfielder Kellen Foster scored the game-winning goal with 1:27 left in the second overtime period as UNCW rallied to earn a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over William & Mary at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Seahawks improved to 8-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the CAA with the win while William & Mary, which is now 4-7-2 overall and 1-5-0 in the league, suffered its fourth consecutive loss. The win also allowed the Seahawks to secure a berth in the six-team CAA Tournament field.

Foster, who tallied his first goal of the season, took a corner kick by freshman midfielder Ben Fisher and scored on a 10-yard shot to give the Seahawks their second win in the last three games.

The Tribe broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute when junior forward Reilly Maw took a crossing pass from senior forward Jackson Eskay and scored his first goal of the season.

UNCW tied the game at 1-1 with 17:13 remaining by virtue of an own goal after a cross by Fisher was deflected into the goal by a William & Mary defender.

Junior goalkeeper Sean Melvin made two saves for the Seahawks, who were outshot by a 13-10 margin.

Post-Game Quotes: Coach Aidan Heaney
"This was such an important three points on the road. W&M made it very difficult for us tonight and was the better team in the first half. We fell behind in the game and had a slice of luck to get the equalizer on an own goal by W&M, which appeared to spark us. We raised our level of play after that and showed great desire to get all three points."

"Kellen had just had a chance saved before his winner, but finished his chance well. This is never an easy place to get any points, so to come home with all three points is fantastic. The win was key as we clinched a spot in the playoffs with two [CAA] games to go, which is a relief. We can now focus on trying to finish in as high of a position as we possibly can and possibly host a home game."
