UNCW Swings Its Way Past Bears With Record Hitting Performance

** story and box score updated from earlier posting

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – Morgan Kline collected 13 kills in 25 attempts with no hitting errors as UNCW swept Morgan State, 3-0, behind a strong hitting effort on Friday at Minges Coliseum in the ECU Invitational.

The Seahawks upped their record to 4-1 with their first road win of the season. Morgan State dropped to 1-4 with the set back.

"Morgan State was a great attacking team that we struggled against defensively," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "But ultimately, it was a good offensive battle on both sides of the net. We were able to test some different lineups and were happy to see our players push through and finish the match in three sets."

UNCW combined to hit a staggering .430 for the match, committing just five hitting errors.

Sydney Brock, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Rookie-of-the-Week, paced the Seahawks in the first set with five of her six kills for the match. UNCW never trailed in the opening set.

Kline then took over pounding down 10 of her 13 kills in the final two sets. In the second set she hit 4-0-8 and topped that in the third and final set, going 6-0-11.

Senior Leah Gagliardi led UNCW with four total blocks while junior Meredith Peacock added three. The Seahawk frontline won the battle at the net, six blocks to two.

Sophomore Alyssa Desjardins and junior Victoria Phillips each handed out 20 assists for the Seahawks.

Zuri Smith and Evely Macedo headed up the Bears with 12 and 10 kills each. Morgan State committed seven service errors and six reception errors.

The Seahawks close out their trip to Greenville on Saturday with a pair of matches against Norfolk State (1 p.m.) and Tennessee Tech (4 p.m.).

Notes: UNCW's .430 hitting average (42-5-86) was a school record in the rally-scoring ERA, topping the previous mark of .396 against Hampton during the 2001 season … Kaitlyn Cobb and Brock joined Kline as Seahawks with no hitting errors in the match … Newcomers Sarah Kelly and Molly Tatum made the UNCW debuts … Brock is hitting .391 (21-3-46) over her last four matches with 18 total blocks.
