Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Dragons Score Late To Edge Seahawks, 1-0, In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior defender Melissa Chapman's header with 12 minutes remaining lifted stingy Drexel past visiting UNCW, 1-0, in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action Sunday at the Vidas Athletic Complex.

The Dragons evened their record at 5-5-1 overall this season and moved to 2-0-0 in the CAA after tacking on Sunday's win to a 1-0 verdict over the College of Charleston on Friday. The Seahawks lost their second straight on the weekend trip to the Delaware Valley and stand 5-5-1 and 0-2-0.

After going without a shutout in the first seven games of the season, Drexel recorded its fourth consecutive shutout and third straight 1-0 victory.

"It was a typical Sunday CAA game today," said Paul Cairney, UNCW's longtime coach. "Both teams battled well. We created some good chances in the second half and believe we did enough to earn a goal.

"Our final decision - our final pass - needs to be sharper. Drexel scored a good goal on a set piece and credit to them for taking the chance presented to them. We will learn from this tough road trip and will work hard to get better this week."

The two teams locked up in a defensive battle until Chapman broke the stalemate with a well-placed goal at 77:58. Senior midfielder Alyssa Findlay sent a direct kick into the box and Chapman speared the ball past UNCW goalie Carolyn Huddy for the decisive score.

Junior goalkeeper Kelsie Fye, third in the CAA in goals against average, picked up the shutout for the Dragons with six saves. Huddy wound up four saves in goal for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks return home to entertain William & Mary (Oct. 3, 7 p.m.) and Elon (Oct. 5, 2 p.m.) next weekend at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

GAME NOTES: UNCW still leads the all-time series with Drexel by an 8-4-2 margin…The Seahawks had seven shots in each period and outshot the Dragons, 14-9…Katrina Guillou, Maddie McCormick and Morgan Leyble each had three shots apiece for UNCW…After erupting for 15 goals in a pair of victories in the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational, the Seahawks have found the net just once in the last three outings…It was the fourth time UNCW has been blanked this fall.
