Seahawks Fall To Blue Hens In CAA Women's Soccer Opener

NEWARK, Dela. – Four different players scored and Delaware broke the game open with a pair of second-half goals to race past UNCW, 4-1, in the the Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer opener for both teams Friday night at Grant Stadium.

The Seahawks, now 5-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the CAA, wrap up their weekend trip to the Delaware Valley by visiting Drexel on Sunday. The Blue Hens are 5-5-0 and 1-0-0 after the decisive win on their home field.

"We were beaten by a good Delaware team tonight," said Paul Cairney, UNCW's veteran coach. "We simply need to bounce back and get ready for another battle on Sunday vs. Drexel."

Junior midfielder Emily Market got things started for the Blue Hens by taking a cross from the right side and connecting at 18:07 for her second goal of the season.

Sophomore midfielder Nikki Adams then increased the score to 2-0 on a shot from 15 yards out at 23:08 to stake the Blue Hens to a 2-0 advantage midway through the first period.

Junior forward Katrina Guillou answered for the Seahawks, however, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half when she scored her sixth goal of the season at 36:06.

But UD's Andrea Arnold added a score at 62:01 to make the cushion 3-1 and Madison Brosler found the net at 81:41 to help the Blue Hens close out the match with a 4-1 decision.

The Seahawks wrap up their weekend trip by moving over to Philadelphia to battle Drexel's Dragons on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Delaware led UNCW in shots, 17-12…Sophomore Carolyn Huddy played all 90 minutes in goal for the Seahawks and had six saves…Natalie Zelenky launched five shots for the Blue Hens…UD leads the all-time series by a 8-6-1 margin…Guillou, Maddie McCormick and Sydney Sawaya had two shots apiece for the Seahawks.
