Highlanders Sweep Seahawks With Strong Net Play

BLACKSBURG, Virginia – Nicole Lott had 11 kills for UNCW, but Radford swept the Seahawks, 3-0, with strong play at the net on Saturday in the Hokie Invitational at Cassell Coliseum.

Radford, the preseason favorite to win the Big South Conference, upped its record to 10-4 with the win and finished the Hokie Invitational with a 2-1 mark. The Seahawks, meanwhile, fell to 10-4 and went 1-2 in the round-robin tournament.

"Like last weekend, today had its highs and lows with a solid win against Marshall, but too many errors against Radofrd that let the match slip away from us," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Consistency in our serve reception has to improve to be able to run our offense more efficiently. We also need to play more confident in tough back-and-forth battles."

Leading the Highlanders offensively were Maddie Palmer with 11 kills and Rachel Wiechecki with nine. RU outhit the Seahawks, .219-.052.

Up front, Radford became the first team to outblock the Seahawks this season, 10-4. The four blocks were a season-low for UNCW.

Morgan Kline had nine kills for UNCW and added eight digs. Victoria Phillips led UNCW with 12 digs.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks open Colonial Athletic Association play on Sept. 28 with a 7 p.m. first-serve against Northeastern. The match will be streamed on the Seahawk Digital Network.

NOTES: The loss evens the all-time series for UNCW with Radford at 3-all … UNCW now stands at 7-2 in sweeps … All three matches this weekend were three-set outings for the Seahawks … UNCW was outhit, .220-.113, for the tournament … The Seahawks held a narrow lead, 24.5-23, in total blocks for the weekend ... Nicole Lott was UNCW's lone all-tournament selection.
