Seahawks Stand Tall In Five-Set Win Over Huskies

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Morgan Kline's career-high tying 20 kills, including seven in the fourth set, helped UNCW rally past visiting Northeastern, 3-2, in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams on Friday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks upped their record to 11-4 with the win while the Huskies dropped to 7-7. For UNCW, it was its first win in 17 attempts in the series dating back to 2005 when NU joined the conference.

Trailing two sets to one, UNCW pulled away late in the fourth set to force a fifth set with a 25-22 win. The Seahawks found themselves behind again in the fifth set, 8-6, when the teams traded ends. That NU lead grew to 9-6 before the Seahawks would rally. UNCW would score four of the next five points and knot the game at 10-all on a service ace by Alyssa Desjardins. A kill from Meredith Peacock gave UNCW a lead, 11-10, it wouldn't lose. Peacock and Kristen Powell ended the match with back-to-back blocks for the final two points.

Kline was the lone Seahawk in double digit kills while Nicole Lott added eight kills and eight digs. Peacock had seven kills and seven blocks.

Desjardins and Lindsay Hartmann held team-high honors with 15 digs apiece for the Seahawks. Desjardins also had 23 assists.

NU placed four in double figure kills with Brigitte Burcescu collecting 17 and Jamie Bredahl chipping in 13. Bredahl finished off a double-double with 15 digs.
Defensively, Northeastern's Natalia Skiba recorded a staggering 38 digs to hold game-high honors.

Peacock led the Seahawks at the net as UNCW finished with an 11-8 advantage in blocks.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks host Hofstra on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on the Seahawk Digital Network.

NOTES:  Kline's career-high for kills was 20 against Georgia State in 2012 … UNCW improved to 5-1 at home and 2-1 in five-set matches … All three five-setters have been at home (NC State, Campbell) … There were 35 ties and 13 total lead changes in the match … Northeastern committed 14 service errors and the teams combined for 25 on the evening.
