UNCW's Streak Halted At Seven By Charlotte

DAVIDSON, North Carolina – UNCW's Morgan Kline and Leah Gagliardi had 14 and 11 kills apiece, but the Seahawks were unable to overcome an early deficit to fall to Charlotte, 3-1, in the Wildcat Classic at Belk Arena on Saturday.

The 49ers improved to 8-4 with the win and finished the tournament undefeated. The Seahawks (9-2) saw its seven-match winning streak halted with the road loss.

"After a strong start to the day against High Point, we just weren't able to continuously build momentu, against Charlotte," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek, who is in her sixth season with the program. "Defensively we didn't have an answer for some of their hitters, which is a credit to their team for a great performance. We have some work to do next week before playing in our final tournament at Virginia Tech."

Irem Asci and Abreia Epps had 17 kills apiece for the 49ers, who hit .198 for the match. Setter Britney Leigh Held handed out a match-high 50 assists and added 13 digs. Shelby Green led Charlotte with 28 digs.

Charlotte claimed the first two sets before the Seahawks were able to claim the third set. In the fourth and final set there were nine ties as the 49ers edged the Seahawks, .241-.233, in hitting average.

Meredith Peacock added eight kills and seven blocks. Alyssa Desjardins, who totaled 28 assists, matched Morgan Owney for team-high honors with 22 digs.

Peacock and Kline earned all-tournament honors for the Seahawks, who finished second in the four-team field.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks visit Blacksburg, Va., for the Hokie Invitational on Sept. 19-20. They will open the tournament with Virginia Tech on Friday at 7 p.m.

NOTES: The Seahawks held an 11-10 lead in blocks and both teams had 85 digs … For Peacock it was her second all-tournament honor and the third for Kline … UNCW is now 4-1 in neutral site games and 1-0 on the road.
