UNCW Falls To Hokies In Volleyball Action

BLACKSBURG, Virginia – Nicole Lott led UNCW with eight kills in 17 attacks, but host Virginia Tech hit .356 for the match as the Hokies swept the Seahawks, 3-0, at the Hokie Invitational on Friday at Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies improved to 5-6 with the win, which was their home opener for the 2014 season. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped to 9-3 with their second consecutive loss.

"Tonight certainly wasn't our best performance, but you have to give credit to a very good Virginia Tech team," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "After a slow start we were able to put together some good runs in the second set to keep it close, but couldn't put it all together to finish. It's always a great opportunity for our team to compete against high calibur teams and to gain some perspective of where we want to get as a program."

Lott hit .353 (8-2-17), but UNCW struggled as a team hitting just .067. Morgan Kline and Meredith Peacock added seven and five kills, respectively. Peacock held match-high honors with six blocks.

VT overcame eight service errors with 48 kills and just 11 hitting errors in 104 swings. Amanda McKinze and Lindsey Owens fashioned double-doubles for the Hokies.

McKinze had a match-high 12 kills and added 10 digs while Owens collected a match-high 17 digs of her own and added 10 kills.

The Hokies won the first set easily, 25-11, before the Seahawks looed to even things up in the second set. UNCW held a 24-22 lead, but the Hokies were able to score five of the last six points to snag a 27-25 win. In the third and final set, VT held a 15-12 lead following a kill from Lott, but closed out the set and the match with a 10-2 run.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks take on Marshall at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and wrap up their tournament appearance with a 5 p.m. first serve against Big South Conference favorite Radford.

NOTES: UNCW has lost consecutive matches for just the first time this season … The sweep against UNCW was the first this season and the Seahawks own a 6-1 record in three-set matches … Virginia Tech's .356 hitting average was a season-high allowed by the Seahawks while UNCW's .067 average was a season-low … UNCW did outblock its opponent, 9-7, for the 11th time this season.
