Seahawks Steamroll Patriots In Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman midfielder Serenity Waters collected a hat trick and five different players found the net as UNCW throttled visiting Francis Marin, 8-0, in the second game of the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Center Invitational Saturday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

Playing a game that was rescheduled from Friday night, UNCW jumped on the Patriots early with seven goals in the first half and never looked back in pushing its record to 4-3-0 on the season. Francis Marion is still looking for its first victory at 0-4-0.

Waters, a newcomer from Sharpsburg, Ga., anchored a 20-shot attack that caught the Patriots off guard early and didn't end until the game was called with 17:10 remaining due to lightning in the area. It marked the fifth time in school history that a player scored a hat trick and the first time since Maddie McCormick netted three goals in a 5-2 victory against Towson on Oct. 19, 2012.

Junior midfielder Lindsey Byrne staked the Seahawks to a quick 2-0 advantage with a pair of goals in a 36-second span just after the opening kickoff. The Charlotte product connected on a low liner just 4:32 into the contest and added another score under the crossbar at 5:08. Katrina Guillou and Kennedy Ulrich picked up assists on the first goal and Ulrich was credited with an assist on the second strike.

The opportunistic Waters then got into the act with her first goal at 34:17 when she took a pass from Moa Jarl and converted for a 3-0 margin. Junior defender Karissa Smith then notched her first career goal at 38:34 off a cross from Abby Register.

The Seahawks pushed the difference to 5-0 at 40:11 when Allye Mertes picked up a loose ball during a corner kick and scored inside the left post and the floodgates opened when Waters struck twice again in 72 seconds to hike the score to 7-0. Junior midfielder Anna Mixon closed out the scoring with her first career goal at 49:04.

Goalkeepers Carolyn Huddy and Liisa Rahkola shared UNCW's second shutout of the new season.

The Seahawks are tentatively scheduled to play the final game of the four-team tournament on Monday at 7 p.m. when they take on regional rival Coastal Carolina. Elon and Francis Marion will square off on Sunday at Noon in Game 3.

GAME NOTES: UNCW improved to 8-1-0 against Francis Marion…A total of 23 players saw action in the game for the Seahawks…The Seahawks launched 18 shots in the first period…Waters fired off six shots to lead the Seahawks…Six different players had one shot apiece for the Patriots…No Seahawk played more than 45 minutes…UNCW has won eight in a row over FMU after dropping the first game in the series in 1996…The seven goals in the first half fell just shy of the school record of eight tallies set vs. Mount Olive on Oct. 27, 1998…Waters just missed tying the school record of four goals scored by all-time great Christy Timbers on Sept. 2, 1998.
