Seahawks Stage Furious Comback But Fall To Wolfpack

UNCW rallied from 2-0 deficit to force a five-set match

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Morgan Kline led three Seahawks in double digit kills, but UNCW was unable to rally from a 2-0 deficit as NC State edged the home standing Seahawks, 3-2, in college volleyball action on Saturday at Hanover Hall.

The loss was the first for UNCW (2-1), who opened the season with wins over Coastal Carolina and Fairfield on Friday. For the Wolfpack, the win pushed their mark to 2-1.

Morgan Kline led the Seahawks with 14 kills while Nicole Lott and Leah Gagliardi added 13 and 10, respectively. Lindsay Hartmann had 20 digs for the Seahawks.

 NCSU's Dariyan Hooper held match-high honors with 16 kills while Rachel Buckley recorded 13. Setter Maggie Speaks handed out a match-best 36 assists.

The Seahawks outhit the Wolfpack, .183-.173, but NCSU hit .350 in the fifth and deciding set for the win.

NC State bolted out to a 2-0 lead after two sets, but the Seahawks captured sets three and four to force the fifth set. In the third set, UNCW trailed 24-23, but rattled off the next three points for the win. In the fourth, the Seahawks ran off the first seven points before coasting to a 25-17 win.

UNCW closes out the season-opening tournament on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start against Eastern Washington.

Notes: The Seahawks have now taken NC State to five sets in each of the last two outings … Tonight's crowd of 631 was the highest total during Head Coach Amy Bambenek's tenure with the Seahawks … Nicole Lott (13k, 13d), Alyssa Desjardins (27a, 11d) and Kline (14k, 13d) recorded double-doubles for the Seahawks … Meredith Peacock had seven total blocks while the Seahawks frontline topped the Wolfpack, 14-11 … The Seahawks will play Eastern Washington for the first time in the program's history on Sunday.
