UNCW Rallies To Force Fifth Set But Falls To Towson

Nicole Lott had 16 kills and 20 digs while the Seahawks combined for 17 blocks

Towson (25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 17-15)

TOWSON, Maryland – The Seahawks battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, but Towson was able to take the final set, 17-15, as the Tigers edged visiting UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association action on Friday at the SECU Arena.

The Tigers, who snuck by the Seahawks twice this season in five sets, improved to 26-4 overall and 12-3 in the league. UNCW dropped its second straight outing and dipped to 19-10 and 9-6.

"This was a tremendous match on both sides of the net and I'm proud of how our team fought till the end," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "We haven't been in many tight situations like this in the fifth, so we need to take it as a learning experience for the upcoming matches we face. As a team, our blocking helped us get back in the match in the third and fourth sets. Nicole (Lott) and Kristen (Powell) had all-around compete matches."

In the final set, UNCW took a 15-14 lead on a kill from Leah Gagliardi, but Victoria Williams had two kills and Candace Steadman finished off a 3-0 run for Towson with a solo block to win it 17-15 and take the match.

Nicole Lott led the Seahawks with 16 kills and a season-high 20 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Kristen Powell added 10 kills and the Seahawks totaled a school-record tying 17 blocks on the night. Sarah Kelly and Meredith Peacock had seven blocks apiece to lead the way.

Williams held match-high honors with 21 kills in 41 attacks for a .439 hitting percentage. Saitaua Iosia added a double-double with 17 kills and 18 kills while Haley Pa'akaula and Steadman added 11 kills apiece. Setter Aimee Schubert doled out 39 assists and recorded a team-high 19 digs.

The Seahawks can finish as the four-seed with a win at Delaware while a loss will drop them to fifth.

With the College of Charleston winning in five at Hofstra, the Cougars will host the CAA championship tournament for the second consecutive season. The tournament opens on Nov. 21-23.

Up next: UNCW closes out the regular season on Saturday with a 7 p.m. start at Delaware.
