Dell Strikes Twice As UNCW Blanks Drexel, 3-0, In Season Finale

Seahawks Can't Finish Lower Than Second, Top Seed Still Up For Grabs

PHILADELPHIA, PennsylvaniaJamie Dell scored twice and Jack Ward added a goal late as #26 UNCW blanked host Drexel, 3-0, in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action on Saturday at the Vidas Athletics Complex.

UNCW won its third straight to finish the regular season with a mark of 12-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the CAA. The Dragons, meanwhile, dropped their fourth straight to close out the season at 5-10-3 and 1-6-1.

"This was a tricky game on the road at Drexel," said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. "This is never an easy place to play, and it took the first goal before we started to settle down and play less tentatively."

"Jamie continued his good form to latch onto Colin's header and score the all-important first goal. They combined again at the start of the second half, and the timing couldn't have been better for us."

Dell, who became the first Seahawk since Sam Leger in 2005 to score 10 goals in a season, opened the scoring in the 25th minute when he converted a chip pass from Colin Bonner and fired a shot inside the near post on the leftside from 12 yards out.

The Dell/Bonner combination extended the lead to 2-0 just five minutes into the second half. Bonner sent Dell in on a breakaway when he headed pass to the streaking midfielder. The two assists gave Bonner three for the season as he moved into second on the team with 11 points.

Jack Ward rounded out the scoring with his first goal of the season, coming in the 74th minute off a feed from Daniel Escobar.

"The second half was a stronger performance and I was really happy for Jack (Ward) to come on and score our third."

UNCW held a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots, but Drexel managed just one on target. Sam Williams made that one save as he posted his third consecutive shutout.

I couldn't be more pleased with the focus and determination of our team. The race for the post season has been tight but our team has shown good quality and defensively have been excellent the last three games. Now we can turn our attention to the playoffs and try and achieve our goal of winning another CAA championship."

Up Next: The Seahawks have clinched a berth in the upcoming CAA championship tournament and can finish no lower than second. UNCW moved into first place with 16 points, but will have to wait the result of Sunday's Elon at Delaware game. The Phoenix enter the contest with 14 points while the Blue Hens have 13 points and own the tie-breaker with the Seahawks. If Delaware, Hofstra and UNCW are tied following tomorrow's final game, UD gets the top seed, UNCW is second and Hofstra third.

Notes: The win snapped a two-game losing skid to the Dragons and gave UNCW a 9-4 lead in the all-time series … UNCW is now 5-1 in Philadelphia … Williams has not allowed a goal since the Elon game, covering a span of 275:14 minutes … For Dell, it was the third time this season he scored twice in a game … Dell also tied UNCW's single-season mark with six game-winning goals … His six game-winners also tie him for second nationally … UNCW also moved into a tie with top-ranked UCLA with seven road wins this season … UNCW has the most wins of any unbeaten team on the road this season … Those seven wins are a new school record set in 1978 and tied three times since … The win was number 123 for Heaney with the Seahawks and he's now within six wins of tying Calvin Lane for the most wins in program history.
