Seahawks Fall To James Madison In CAA Semis, 2-0

UNCW will wait until Monday when they hope to hear their name called for the NCAA Tournament

NEWARK, Delaware – Josh Grant scored the opening goal in the 34th minute to lift James Madison to a 2-0 win over 21st-ranked UNCW on Friday in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament on Friday.

The Dukes improved to 9-7-4 and will face the winner of the Delaware/Northeastern game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Seahawks dropped to 12-4-2 and saw their three-game winning streak halted.

Grant scored what would prove to be the difference with 11:08 remaining in the opening half. Francisco Narbon began the play in the middle of the field and sent a short pass to Toby Appleton, who sent another short pass to Grant, who worked his way through the Seahawks defense. Grant then slid a shot inside the left post from eight yards out for his fifth goal of the season.

The Dukes pushed their lead to 2-0 just four minutes into the second half on a penalty kick by Jonathan Barden. UNCW goalkeeper Sam Williams was whistled for the foul as he fielded a loose ball in the penalty area and collided with a JMU player.

JMU held a narrow 8-6 advantage in shots on the evening.

Williams finished with three saves while JMU's Kyle Morton needed to make just one save to record his eighth shutout of the season.

Up next: The Seahawks will have to wait till Monday when the NCAA sets the field of 48 for the championship tournament.

Notes: Both teams combined for 40 fouls with the Seahawks being called for a season-high 22 … Alexander Schlobohn took UNCW's only shot on frame, coming in the 30th minute of the game … Jamie Dell was held to no shots taken for the first time this season … Each team took corner kicks … UNCW fell to 0-4 against JMU all-time in the CAA tournament and were knocked out by the Dukes for the second time in three seasons.
