Second Half Goals From Dell, Bonner Spark #22 Men's Soccer

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Second half goals from Jamie Dell and Colin Bonner sparked nationally-ranked UNCW to a 2-0 win over Colonial Athletic Association rival College of Charleston on Wednesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks, who appeared in all four major polls this week for the first time this season, improved to 9-2-1 overall and 2-1 in the CAA. CofC, meanwhile, dropped its sixth straight contest to dip to 2-7-1 and 0-2.

Following a first half that saw a combined seven shots by both teams, the Seahawks needed just 23 seconds to take the lead as Dell notched his seventh goal of the season. The play started on the left flank with a pass from Kalvin Kromer to Mark Harris, who beat his defender to the end line. Harris sent a cross to the far right side of the penalty area where Dell volleyed a shot inside the right post for the lead.

Bonner extended UNCW's lead in the 74th minute when he headed home a throw in from Jacob VanCompernolle. Bonner's header came from the top of the penalty area and snuck inside the left post.

The Seahawks finished with a 14-4 lead in shots, bolstered by a 10-1 edge in the second half.

Defensively the Seahawks shut down the Cougars, allowing just two shots on goal.

UNCW goalkeeper Sean Melvin posted his fourth clean sheet of the season, making two saves.

Up next: The Seahawks visit James Madison for a 7 p.m. start on Oct. 11.

Notes: Dell now has five game-winning goals on the season, which ties him for the national lead … UNCW asserted itself in the second half, totaling nine corners kicks to CofC's one … Harris and Kromer each recorded their first assists of the season … UNCW now leads the all-time series with CofC, 6-4-1 … UNCW's two-goal win matched its largest margin of victory this season.
