Volleyball Halts JMU's Winning Streak In Impressive Fashion

HARRISONBURG, Virginia – Morgan Kline had 16 kills and Kristen Powell and Nicole Lott added 15 apiece as UNCW rolled past James Madison, 3-1, in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action at Sinclair Gymnasium on Friday.

The Seahawks completed a sweep of its brief swing through Virginia for a pair of conference matches to improve to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in the CAA. The Dukes had their five-match winning streak halted with the loss and dropped to 10-6 and 2-1.

"I don't think I could have scripted things any better," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Everyone stepped up in a huge way to earn every point of this win. We are strongest when multiple people can contribute kills and felt the offense was very balanced, which made it hard for JMU to defend. Getting two road wins is a great feeling and we look to carry that momentum into practice as we prepare for next week."

Kline led the Seahawks after UNCW dropped the opening set. She had five kills in the second set and added six in the fourth to finish with 16 kills in 35 attacks for a .371 hitting average. Powell too was a model of consistency with 15 kills in 26 attempts with just two hitting errors (.500 havg).

After hitting just hitting .081 in the opening set, UNCW rallied with averages of .366, .565 and .429 to close out the match.

Defensively, UNCW outblocked JMU, 12-6, led by Meredith Peacock's eight total blocks. Kline added four of her own. Morgan Owney paced the Seahawks with 17 digs.

JMU's Janey Goodman led al hitters with 21 kills and finished with a .311 hitting average. Goodman managed six kills in each of the first three sets. MacKenzie Kleespies held match-high honors with 19 digs.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks visit Elon on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.

NOTES: There were 13 ties and four scores changes alone in the first set … The Seahawks had no reception errors for the second straight match … UNCW has won the last five editions of the all-time series … Lott's 15 kills were a season high and one short of her career high of 16 … Freshman Sarah Kelly made her third career start and tied her season-high with three kills … UNCW's .338 hitting average was the tenth highest in program history and third highest this season.
