Phoenix Score Late To Clip Seahawks In CAA Tilt, 2-1

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior forward Jason Waterman rifled a shot into the left corner of the net with just over five minutes left to lift Elon past No. 18 UNCW, 2-1, in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action Wednesday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Phoenix improved to 6-4-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference with the road victory. The Seahawks now stand 9-3-2 and 2-2-1.

Elon used an early goal by junior midfielder James Brace to grab a 1-0 advantage just seven minutes into the contest before UNCW's Mateo Cardona scored the equalizer from 15 yards out at 43:22 off an assist from David Sizemore.

The two teams locked up in a defensive battle for most of the second half before Waterman took a long cross, dribbled against a UNCW defender and launched his game winner past UNCW junior goalkeeper Sam Williams at 84:46.

Williams wound up with two saves on the night and Elon goalkeeper Nathan Dean recorded three saves for the Phoenix.

GAME NOTES: It was the first meeting between the two state rivals since Elon became a member of the CAA this season…Elon built an 11-10 advantage in shots on the night…Waterman led the way for the Phoenix with four shots…Nine different players had a shot for the Seahawks…A total of seven yellow cards were distributed.
