Cardona Strikes Twice As #18 UNCW Blanks Rival Northeastern, 2-0

BROOKLINE, MassachusettsMateo Cardona scored twice in a 1:12 span in the second half to lead UNCW past host Northeastern, 2-0, on Saturday in a key Colonial Athletic Association game at Parsons Field.

The 18th-ranked Seahawks (10-3-2, 3-2-1 CAA) gained a big three points on the road with the win and remain tied for the conference lead with 10 points. The Huskies fell to 5-9-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the league.

"This was a huge three points on the road at Northeastern tonight," said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. "I thought our players played with such focus tonight, in difficult, slick conditions. Mateo will deservedly grab the headlines with two key goals but it was a very good overall team effort."

With neither team able to break through in the first 62 minutes, UNCW and Cardona were able to advantage of a yellow card issued to a NU player at the 62:05 mark. Cardona stepped up and fired a shot into the upper right corner for the first goal.

Cardona would strike again at the 63:17 mark. The midfielder was in the right place at the right time and converted a rebound off a saved shot taken by Jamie Dell.

The Huskies were unable to get anything past UNCW goalkeeper Sam Williams, who finished with two saves while facing 11 shots. For Williams, it was his first clean sheet of the season and the fourth of his career.

"Our back four was solid all night, and after an even first half, thought we really stepped up second half. Scoring two goals in quick succession gave us a ton of confidence and we played some very good stuff."

Dylan Faber made four saves after entering the game in the 22nd minute for NU.

"Now we get a chance to have a week of preparation to play Hofstra next Saturday night on Senior Night."

Up next: The Seahawks host Hofstra in their home finale on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. UNCW will honor their seniors prior to the game.

Notes: The Seahawks earned their first road win in its series with Northeastern, it was also the first road win for either side in the series … UNCW holds a 5-4-3 lead all-time against Northeastern … Sam Williams made his third straight start in goal for the Seahawks … Cardona now has four goals on the season and three in his last two outings.
