Tom Riordan, who enters his 26th year at UNCW, was elevated to lead the Athletics Communications staff in July of 2024.
Riordan joined the department in the fall of 1999 after a successful career at New York Tech as a student-athlete and sports information director.
Riordan, a native of Norfolk, Va., but raised on Long Island, was a pitcher and infielder for the Bears from 1990-93 and stayed with the program to serve as the school's first SID. He worked at Tech for five years before accepting a post at UNCW.
At Tech, Riordan publicized the NCAA Division II school's nationally-ranked track and field and lacrosse programs as well as NYIT's Division I baseball program. He assisted with a pair of national championship runs by the Bears in lacrosse and worked numerous East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship events.
Riordan assists with all phases of UNCW's sports information operation including the development of the department's website and UNCWsports.com's migration to XOS-Jump TV in 2008 and to Sidearm Sports in 2014.
He is the primary contact for UNCW's nationally-ranked baseball program, which has been tabbed by D1Baseball.com as one of the top programs in all aspects from recruiting to success on the field and in the regionals. The Seahawks were ranked 46th entering the 2020 season.
During his tenure with the program, the Seahawks have made 12 NCAA regional appearances and had 71 student-athletes drafted in the MLB Draft. In 2019, Greg Jones was selected in the first round with the 22nd pick overall by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Tom, who is a longtime member of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, served as the association's president for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
