Kim Tingley 2016-17 Headshot

Kim Tingley

Veteran assistant coach Kim Tingley enters her fifth season as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball program at UNCW.

In addition to serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator, Tingley is responsible for organizing the team’s annual high school coaches’ clinic and is a liaison to the academic services office.

In her first four seasons with the program, Tingley has played a key role in the development of the Seahawks’ backcourt. In 2012-13, senior Tawanna Lee ranked among the top 10 players in the CAA in three-point field goals made (1.9 per game), assists (2.9) and three-point field goal percentage (.335) while guard Kelva Atkins earned All-Tournament Team honors at the CAA Championship after leading the Seahawks to a first-round victory over George Mason and a near upset of eventual tournament champion Delaware.

In 2013-14, Atkins enjoyed a breakout campaign as she ranked among the top four players in the CAA in points (15.8 per game), rebounds (5.5), assists (3.2) and steals (2.1) en route to receiving second team All-CAA honors as well as All-Tournament Team accolades at both the CAA Championship and Cancun Challenge. Freshman Brie Mobley also shined under Tingley’s guidance, averaging 11.7 points per game to garner CAA All-Rookie Team distinction.

Under Tingley's guidance, Atkins and Mobley both enjoyed stellar seasons during the 2014-15 campaign. Atkins earned first team All-CAA notice after ranking third in the league with a 16.7 point per game average. Meanwhile, Mobley received a spot on the All-CAA second team after finishing the year as the eighth-leading scorer in the conference with a 13.4 average.

Senior guard Shatia Cole became the latest member of the UNCW backcourt to earn All-CAA accolades after earning third team distinction in 2015-16. Cole was the team's leading scorer with a 12.9 scoring average, which ranked 11th in the CAA.

Tingley joined the Seahawks' program in the summer of 2012 from Kennesaw State where she spent one year as an assistant coach and served as interim head coach following the retirement of head coach Colby Tilley at the end of the season. In her lone campaign with the Owls, Tingley helped the program record its first Atlantic Sun Tournament victory and played a key role in the development of Atlantic Sun Conference Rookie-of-the-Year Taylor Mills.

Prior to her time in Georgia, Tingley spent four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Seton Hall. Tingley was responsible for signing a pair of All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selections and also had a recruiting class ranked in the Top 25.

Tingley began her coaching career as an assistant at Robert Morris in 2002-03 before moving to Manhattan. In three seasons with the Jaspers, Tingley was responsible for recruiting two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team members.  In addition, Tingley monitored the academic progress of the women’s basketball student-athletes, helping the program receive a No. 13 ranking in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Academic Team Honor Roll for the 2004-05.

A native of Coudersport, Pa., Tingley is no stranger to the Colonial Athletic Association. She began her career at West Virginia before transferring to Delaware. Tingley helped the Blue Hens capture the 2001 America East Conference championship and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In their first season in the CAA in 2001-02, the Blue Hens advanced to the Postseason WNIT.

A two-time Dean’s List honoree at Delaware, Tingley graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Recreation and Park Management in 2002.
