Garrett Furnal embarks on his second season as an assistant coach on the Seahawks' staff in 2018.
Furnal joined the Seahawks after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College, where he led the Blue Hose to back-to-back 25-win seasons. Under Furnal’s tutelage, the Blue Hose reached the championship game of the Big South Conference Tournament in 2015, marking the program’s highest finish in the league.
During his time at Presbyterian, Furnal coached 18 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes and had seven players earn All-Big South notice. The Blue Hose posted a 50-53 record in Furnal’s two years with the program.
Prior to his time at Presbyterian, Furnal was an assistant coach at the University of Louisiana Monroe in 2014 and served as the Warhawks’ hitting coach. He helped the Warhawks post their highest batting average since 1984 as well as setting team marks for home runs, runs batted in, and on-base percentage.
A 2013 graduate of Iowa State, Furnal served as a student manager for the Cyclones from 2011-13 after transferring from Missouri. In addition to working in the bullpen with pitchers and catchers, he assisted with video, offensive and defensive drills and field maintenance. At Missouri, the Tigers won the Big XII Conference title and reached the NCAA Women’s College World Series in 2011.
Furnal began his coaching career as a student assistant coach at Marshalltown Community College after playing as a freshman. He was involved in travel and practice plans, along with developing workout regimens and ensuring equipment and facilities were ready for game day.
