McClernan, who enters her fourth season with the Seahawks in 2020-21, joined the program after serving as an assistant at UConn, where she worked with the sprint and mid-distance swimmers. She was also in charge of all recruiting activities for the women’s program.
UNCW's sprinters flourished under her direction in 2019-20 with seven performances being among the all-time best in program history. Evan Arsenault set school records in the 50 (22.34), 100 (48.95) and 200 (1:49.18) Free events at the CAA Championships. Arsenault won the 50 Free added top-three finishes in each of the other two races.
Prior to joining the staff at UConn, McClernan coached at the club level in her home town of Raleigh, N.C. There she worked with the Raleigh Swimming Association from 2007-10.
As a collegiate swimmer, McClernan was a four-year letter winner at Northeastern and concluded her career as the program’s record-holder in the 200 Breaststroke (2:14.10). As a senior, she posted an NCAA “B” qualifying time in that same event.
McClernan graduated from Northeastern cum laud with a degree in Business Administration, focusing on management, marketing and international affairs.
