Kyle Gilbert joined the Seahawk Strength & Conditioning staff in the fall of 2017 as an assistant coach.
Gilbert, 27, worked previously as Director of Sports Performance for all 20 varsity teams at Windermere (Fla.) Prep, including the nationally-recognized football and basketball teams. He also served as the head strength coach for the women’s track and field team at UCF in 2012 and assisted the Knights with football, baseball, volleyball, softball and rowing. He also worked as an intern at Florida State in Tallahassee.
“The opportunity to come to UNCW and work with Coach (Ben) Fleming again is a blessing,” said Gilbert. “I’ve always followed UNCW since my mother was born in Wilmington. It feels like I’m coming home.
“My goal is to prepare our student-athletes for the rigor and demands of intercollegiate competition through the utilization of total athletic enhancement training on an individualized as well as team-specific basis.”
Gilbert graduated from Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, Fla., where he lettered in weightlifting and football. Gilbert earned his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Central Florida in 2012.
He is certified by the CSCCA and holds a Level I coaching certificate from USA Weightlifting as well as the Fly Solo certification by the NSCA.
Gilbert has a unique tie to UNCW; his maternal grandfather, Hugh Henry Fox, was the first student to receive his Associate of Arts Degree from Wilmington College on April 2, 1949. Fox also served as the first student body president and vice-president of the first student legislature.
He enjoys working out, going to the beach, snowboarding and trying out new restaurants.
