UNCW’s Film Studies Program Enjoys Blockbuster Success
      A recent article in USA Today highlights the advantages UNCW’s film studies majors have by attending a university nestled in “Hollywood East.” Students create more than 500 motion picture projects in 22 production courses each year. With 80 local internships each year, the department has the largest internship program in the UNCW College of Arts and Sciences.
 
UNCW Makes Fiske Guide to Colleges 2015
      The University of North Carolina Wilmington has been included in the 2015 updated edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges. For more than 30 years, students, parents and guidance counselors have relied on the Fiske Guide to Colleges to deliver an insider's look at the academic climates and the social and extracurricular scenes of the "best and most interesting" schools not only in the U.S., but also Canada and Great Britain.
 
UNCW On U.S. News & World Report’s Top 25 In Veterans Online Programs
      U.S. News & World Report, publisher of Best Colleges and Best Online Programs, has released the 2014 Best Online Programs for Veterans on usnews.com. UNCW has tied at #22 with UNC Pembroke. The rankings, now in their second year, were designed to help veterans identify high-quality online degree programs that suit their educational needs.
 
The Princeton Review Names UNCW One of the "Best in the Southeast"
      The University of North Carolina Wilmington has been named one of the “Best in the Southeast” on The Princeton Review’s 2014 Best Colleges: Region by Region” list. The Princeton Review observes thousands of institutions for each of their four “Best in” regions. Selections are based upon an institution’s academic excellence, as well as student’s ratings on several factors like campus dining, professors and overall campus life.  
 
UNCW Recognized by Kiplinger's Personal Finance
      On Dec. 11, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance recognized UNCW as one of the “100 Best Values in Public Colleges, 2014.” The University moved into the top 30, to # 28, up four slots from the previous year. Kiplinger’s begins with almost 600 institutions and ranks their top 100 public universities based on excellence and affordability. These new rankings will appear in their February issue but are online now.  
 
UNCW Receives Reaccreditation from Southern Association of Colleges  
      The evaluation team representing the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) has reaffirmed the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s reaccreditation. After two years of self-study and assessment by the university, the SACS team visited the campus in March for review.
 
Watson College of Education Wins National Award
      The Watson College of Education’s Professional Development System (PDS) Partnership
has received an award from the National Association for Professional Development Schools (NAPDS). The NAPDS Award for Exemplary PDS Achievement was created in 2009 to recognize school-university partnerships that successfully prepare teacher candidates for the classroom by embracing active engagement in P-12 schools.
 
Two UNCW Students Awarded Prestigious Hollings Scholarships
      Two University of North Carolina Wilmington students have been named 2014 Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship recipients. Tyler Gampp, a chemistry and mathematics major, and Shea Volkel, a marine biology major, are among the 106 undergraduates from across the nation selected by The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to receive these awards.   
 
UNCW Recognized as a Leading Innovator by IdeaScale
      IdeaScale, a leading crowdsourcing and open innovation software provider, announced the final winners of its Innovation Awards Competition and recognized UNCW as the winner in the category of Efficiency Expert. This category recognizes members of the IdeaScale community that can best demonstrate innovative and new organizational efficiencies as a result of IdeaScale community suggestion.         
 
Professor Kelley Receives Board of Governors Award for Excellence
         The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Patricia Kelley, professor of geology, has been selected to receive a 2014 Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. Created in 1994, the award is the highest honor given to faculty for teaching excellence. It encourages, identifies, recognizes, rewards, and supports excellence in teaching within a university and Kelley will be honored during UNCW’s Spring commencement ceremony.
 
UNCW Provost Elected to Association of Chief Academic Leadership Position
          Denise A. Battles, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, has been elected secretary of the newly established Association of Chief Academic Officers. ACAO is the first national organization representing chief academic officers (CAOs) from all accredited higher education institutions. The organization provides a forum for CAOs to discuss important academic affairs issues with one another.
 
Ross Honored with Conservation Award from Department of the Interior
         Steve Ross, University of North Carolina Wilmington Research Professor, has been honored with a Partners in Conservation Award from the U.S. Department of the Interior. The awards recognize conservation achievements that highlight cooperation among diverse federal, state and local governments; public and private entities; non-profit organizations and individuals.
 
Castagno Receives Fulbright Scholar Award
         Paul Castagno, UNCW Professor of Theatre, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Scholar award has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholar award to the United Kingdom. Castagno is the first UNCW professor to be named a Fulbright Scholar to the UK, the most competitive of the Fulbright countries.
 
Honors College Newsletter Receives National Accolades
          Periplus, the UNCW Honors College newsletter, tied for first place in an annual competition sponsored by the National Collegiate Honors Council. The UNCW Honors Media Board editors traveled to the National Collegiate Honors Council conference in New Orleans to receive the award and to present a round-table discussion on best practices for managing an honors media board.
 
Professor Herb Berg to Receive Governor's Award for Excellence
         Herbert Berg, professor of international studies, philosophy and religion at UNCW, has been selected to receive the Governor’s Award for Excellence. Berg’s accomplishments are extensive. As a professor, he has expanded his range by teaching in departments other than his own, such as international studies, foreign languages and literatures and graduate liberal studies.
 
Crowning Achievement: UNCW Student Named Miss North Carolina
        Beth Stovall, a senior majoring in vocal performance, was crowned Miss North Carolina during the state pageant at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium.  Stovall was one of 34 young women vying for the title. Stovall won the Overall Talent Award during the pageant, an award she shared with Miss Central Carolina Victoria Huggins.
