Women’s Soccer Battles Back for 1-1 Draw at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – The UNCW women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Georgia Southern on Sunday, with junior Caigan Leonard providing the second-half equalizer on the road.

"Our staff is really proud of our team's effort on the road against a very good Georgia Southern team," said UNCW head coach Chris Neal. "The conditions were tough, but I thought we did some great things. Fighting back from a goal down, again, shows the character of these Seahawks. This match is definitely going to continue to prepare us for CAA play."

Georgia Southern (2-0-2) took an early lead in the 30th minute after converting a penalty kick and carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Leonard leveled the match in the 51st minute with an assist from Allie Planeaux, marking her third goal of the season.

The physical match featured 15 fouls by Georgia Southern, but the UNCW defense remained composed throughout the contest. The Seahawks, now 3-0-1 on the season, were led defensively by Rachel Fry, Macy Lutz, Ava Chuderewicz and Alyssa Chuderewicz, who helped limit the Eagles to 11 shots, including seven in the second half. The Seahawks also blocked three consecutive shots during a second-half sequence and allowed just two Georgia Southern corner kicks throughout the match.

The Seahawks return home Aug. 27 to host VCU, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
