Softball Falls 5-4 in Series Finale

Seahawks Host Campbell Next Weekend

MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina – Charleston plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a walk-off single off the bat of Austy Miller, to spoil the UNCW softball team's bid for sweep with a 5-4 verdict on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point.

The Cougars improved to 25-26 and 13-8 in the league as they move closer towards securing a seed in the 2026 Coastal Athletic Association Championship.

The Seahawks (29-15, 16-5 CAA) have already clinched a CAA Tournament berth and stand one game behind Campbell in the CAA South Division ahead of a pivotal three-game set at Boseman Field to determine the CAA South champion next weekend from April 30 to May 2.

Juniors Madison Biddle and Cassidy Relay each recorded three hits while Ava Tsiouplis and Ava Brookshire collected two hits apiece for the Seahawks, who totaled 13 hits in the series finale.

The contest started and ended with action, as eight of the nine combined runs scored happened in the first and seventh innings.

Charleston's Hailey Seymour erased an early 2-0 Seahawk lead, thanks to RBI knocks by Biddle and Brookshire, with a bases-clearing, two-out double in the bottom of the first.

Freshman Emily Whitwell tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth on a fielder's choice to score Addi Yates, who crossed home on a Miller throwing error.

Similar to the first two games of the weekend, the Seahawks went ahead late, this time in the form of an Averie Daughtry RBI single, in the seventh, only for Leela Langston to tie the game in the bottom half to set the stage for Miller's walk-off single.

Charleston's Mackenzie Mathis (13-7) picked up the win while freshman Camille Hamilton (13-4) was tagged with the loss.

UNCW now turns its attention towards next week's regular season finale vs. Campbell as it looks to lock in seeding ahead of the CAA Tournament. The winner of the CAA South Division will earn a top-two seed and first-round bye in the six-team field at Elon from May 6-9.
