Five Seahawks Reach Double Figures in Home Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Five UNCW men's basketball players reached double figures but a late 12-1 Charleston run pushed the Cougars past the Seahawks 79-76 before a sold-out Trask Coliseum on Senior Night late Sunday.

The Cougars closed the regular season at 21-10 and 14-4 in the Coastal Athletic Association with their fifth straight win. The Seahawks (25-5, 14-3 CAA) saw their six-game win streak snapped in their home finale.

Senior Nolan Hodge led the Seahawks with 15 points while fellow senior Christian May surpassed 1,000 points with his 13-point effort.

Redshirt junior Patrick Wessler notched his CAA-leading 15th double-double of 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds while junior Jahnathan Lamothe equaled his total. Senior Noah Ross rounded out the quintet with 10 points.

Charleston's Jlynn Counter (23) and Chris Davis, Jr. (17) combined for 40 points while Connor Hickman delivered 10 points off the bench.

The Seahawks erased an early 8-2 hole with a 16-2 run midway through the first half and led by as many as 15 points in the opening period that concluded with a 35-23 advantage.

Seven straight Cougar points early in the second half trimmed the deficit to five, 44-39, with 14:45 and set off a back-and-forth contest that kept the Seahawks' lead as high as eight points, 63-55, with under seven minutes to go.

Charleston rattled off its game-changing run that was capped by a Hickman three-pointer for their first lead since 15:36 in the first half, 67-64, with 2:34 to go.

With the game tied 69-69 with less than one minute remaining, the Cougars scored 10 of the final 17 points and held off a late-game-tying attempt by May at the buzzer to split the season series between the two clubs for the first time since 2017.

Hodge, Ross, May, Greedy Williams, Madison Durr, JoJo Fullwood and Grady Whitt, along with two student managers – David Corwin and Michaela Quinlan – were honored in a pregame Senior Night ceremony.

UNCW closes out the season on Tuesday at Elon at 7 p.m. The Seahawks, who have secured the No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament, can still secure the outright regular season championship with a win over the Phoenix.
