Softball Drops Contests to South Alabama, #11 Georgia

ATHENS, Georgia – The UNCW softball team saw its four-game win streak snapped with a pair of setbacks to South Alabama and No. 11 Georgia at the Turner Softball Stadium on Saturday as part of the Bulldog Classic.

The Jaguars (12-6) scored all three runs in the bottom of the fifth to blank the Seahawks (8-7) before the host Bulldogs (16-5) earned a 9-1 run-rule victory.

South Alabama's Sydney Scapin and Ryley Harrison (7-3) worked around nine Seahawk hits to toss seven scoreless innings with eight total strikeouts.

UNCW's Makayla Huddleston (2-5) struck out six across five innings in which she surrendered only one run.

A sac-fly in the bottom of the fifth highlighted a three-run frame that included three Jaguars hits and three Seahawk errors.

Juniors Averie Daughtry and Cassidy Relay fashioned multi-hit games, along with freshman Ava Brookshire.

Georgia's Destin Howard (1-1) carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning before an Emily Whitwell double and Becca Merrick single put runners on the corners and set up a Grace Hennessy sac-fly for the Seahawks' first run of the weekend.

The Bulldogs tallied 14 hits, six of which went for extra bases, highlighted by Marisa Miller's first-inning grand slam in part of a five RBI for the senior catcher.

Freshman Camille Hamilton (3-1) worked two innings and junior Peyton Eckert followed with a pair of scoreless relief innings before Sarah Gordon homered in her third straight game with a two-run walk-off roundtripper to end the game in five innings.

UNCW will meet South Alabama and Georgia again on Sunday in back-to-back games starting at 10:30 a.m. The Seahawks and Bulldogs contest scheduled for 1 p.m. will stream on the SEC Network Plus on the ESPN app.
