TOWSON, Md. – The UNCW women's soccer team earned a 2-1 road victory over Towson on Thursday at Tiger Field behind goals from
Hailey Longwell and
Ava Vaughan.
"This team continues to amaze me with what they're capable of", said head coach
Chris Neal. "That's about the hardest environment you can come into on the road in the CAA. Towson are extremely well organized and talented. We will enjoy this tonight, but we have three more days on the road in the CAA and we have to get prepared for another difficult environment and a great Drexel team on Sunday."
The Seahawks (8-0-6, 3-0-2 CAA) struck early when Longwell headed home a goal in the opening three minutes to give UNCW a 1-0 lead. The defensive line of
Macy Lutz,
Alyssa Chuderewicz,
Ava Chuderewicz and
Rachel Fry helped maintain the advantage, limiting Towson (6-5-2, 3-2 CAA) to four shots in the first half and only a total of nine shots throughout the whole match.
UNCW extended its lead just after halftime when Vaughan converted a penalty kick in the 46th minute. The goal marked Vaughan's second successful penalty kick of the season and gave the Seahawks a 2-0 advantage.
Towson's Sophie Thibeault scored in the 72nd minute to cut into the lead, but UNCW held on through the final 18 minutes for the 2-1 victory.
Goalkeeper
Lili White played her first full 90 minutes of the season, making five saves on seven shots on goal.
The Seahawks return to action Sunday, Oct. 11, when they visit Drexel at noon at Vidas Field. The match be will streamed on FloCollege.
