UNCW Opens Key CAA Series With Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Sam Vanda's 15th kill of the night capped a match-ending 5-0 run as UNCW topped host Stony Brook in four sets (27-29, 25-15, 25-15, 25-23) on Friday at Pritchard Gymnasium in a key Coastal Athletic Association volleyball match.

The victory lifted the Seahawks (12-12) to 6-5 in the league while the Seawolves (11-10) bowed to 5-6.

Trailing 23-20, a kill by Gaby Zovko ignited the match-winning rally. Courtney Graham followed with a kill, forcing a Stony Brook timeout. A pair of SBU attack errors gave the Seahawks a 24-23 lead, and Vanda ended it with a kill.

Leading the Seahawks, who hit .278, were Elaina Murphy with 11 kills and Graham with 10.

Zovko hit .692 on the strength of nine kills, doled out 43 assists, and picked up 10 digs. Nadia Wasilewski added nine kills.
Elia Sanders of Stony Brook led all hitters with 16 kills.

Early in the fourth set, Vanda joined Wasilewski and Murphy with over 200 kills on the season. It was the first time for the program since 2019 that three players passed that plateau.

In the first set, UNCW was serving for set point four times, but was unable to get the next point as Stony Brook rallied from a seven-point deficit.

In the second set, the Seahawks locked down the SBU offense, allowing a paltry .067 hitting average, and that continued in the third set as UNCW never trailed.

The series closes with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.
